Sunni Tieze was
born in Washington State, in the shadow of, then intact,
Mount St. Helens. As a young girl, she moved with her family
to more sleepy mountains, settling in Keystone, Colorado.
She grew up very tied to the natural world around her, exploring
the rugged hills that cradled her home. Skiing became a favorite
pastime, and Sunni participated in countless downhill races
throughout her teenage years.
Lured by her Norwegian heritage,
she and a school friend spent six months traveling throughout
Scandinavia, finding passage aboard the many fishing boats
that dotted the scenic fjords. With this experience to
add to her store of influences, Sunni began painting, teasing
the canvas with her soulful impressions of the diverse
breadth of the beautiful valley she called home.
After two years at Pomona College, she married Alf
Tieze and together they operated a Bavarian restaurant and a condominium
complex in the heart of the blossoming ski village of Keystone. She continued
to travel and to paint, while raising two children, Karina
Wetherbee and Erik
Tieze.
Sunni Tieze’s art work hangs regularly in the concert
hall of the Snake
River Music Festival, and her painting of “Snake
River Rock” has become the beloved image gracing the |
festival’s
programs and CD’s. In addition, Sunni
has displayed her paintings in galleries and restaurants
in Taos, New Mexico, where she and her husband spend some
of the year. As a result, the deep colors and fascinating
geographical formations of the Southwest have made their
ways into Sunni’s
recent works, further enhancing her already dynamic style.
